SUMMARY:12th Integrate Network Annual Meeting
DESCRIPTION:On behalf of our current Chair\, Gergely Zagyvai\, we are pleased to invite you to the 12th Integrate Network Annual Meeting! The event will take place from 13th to 15th of October 2026 in Visegrád\, Hungary. It also marks the 10th year since the Integrate Network was initiated through the Prague Declaration\, signed by Germany and the Czech Republic in 2016. Subsequently\, this led to the Integrate Network Multi-Donor Trust Fund\, which started in the autumn of 2022. \nTogether\, we will address the topic of “Resilient Forests in a Changing Climate: Exploring Central European Perspectives for Integrative Forest Management”. The Integrate Network Annual Meeting will focus on the challenges faced in Central Europe\, particularly in Hungary. Forests in that region are subject to considerable pressures due to climate change impacts\, including the increase in drought events\, heat waves\, forest health (insect and pathogen impacts)\, discussions around invasive tree species\, as well as biodiversity loss. Furthermore\, the high share of light-demanding species and the expansion of non-forest areas further complicate forest management. \nThe meeting will highlight how integrative forest management can enhance resilience and support adaptive decision-making\, complemented by modern digital tools and decision support systems. Based on these topics\, our discussions will centre around topics such as: \n• Practical field examples\, including continuous cover forestry\, habitat tree designation\, and non-wood production forest management \n• Climate-induced forest degradation and adaptive management options \n• Digital solutions such as GIS\, remote sensing\, and applications \n• Risks and opportunities related to invasive species and assisted migration \n• Forest health challenges and adaptation strategies\, including insect impacts \n• Specific management aspects of forest–steppe ecosystems \nThe meeting will provide an opportunity to share Central European experiences and exchange those with those gained in other countries and regions\, present innovative tools\, and reflect on future challenges and opportunities relevant across Europe.

SUMMARY:Practical Tree Marking for Continuous Cover Forestry (CCF) in Scotland
DESCRIPTION:Silviculture Academy and Pro Silva Britain have opened registration for a free\, one-day course on Practical Tree Marking for Continuous Cover Forestry (CCF) at Darnaway Forest in Moray\, Scotland. Organised in partnership with Darnaway Estate\, this field-based training aims to address a well-recognised skills gap in CCF management across the UK. Pro Silva Britain members currently have priority booking for these limited sessions\, which will open to a wider audience if spaces remain available. \nCourse Schedule and Location \n\nDates: October 9\, October 12\, and October 14\, 2026.\nVenue Base: Conicavel Sawmill\, Darnaway Estate\, Moray\, IV36 2TG.\nDaily Timing: 09:30 to 16:30.\n\nDigital Integration and Learning Methodology \n\nParticipants conduct virtual tree-marking simulations directly in the forest using provided tablet computers equipped with bespoke I+ software.\nThe technology calculates instant metrics on potential timber product assortments\, economic returns\, and biodiversity scores encompassing up to 34 specific tree microhabitat types.\nThe interactive\, problem-based learning (PBL) methodology mirrors European silviculture training\, fostering peer-to-peer discussions on forest management and conservation.\n\nMarteloscope Plot Exercises \n\nDarnaway 1 (0.25 ha\, Plot 257): Set in a Douglas fir plantation currently in early transformation following its second thinning. Participants practice selecting elite frame trees and simulating competitor removals to model CCF trajectories and enhance stand stability.\nDarnaway 2 (0.50 ha\, Plot 258): Located in a mature stand comprising predominantly Scots pine with a common beech understorey. Trainees simulate selective beech reduction to open regeneration niches while balancing structural diversity and long-term timber quality.\n\nThe Integrate Darnaway project was established with funding from Vastern Timber Ltd. and the Scottish Forestry Trust. The creation of these two plots integrates the UK into a wider initiative supported by the European Forest Institute\, joining an international network of over 260 marteloscope sites across 27 countries. \nContact: Ted Wilson\, email: ted.wilson@silviculture.org.uk; phone: +44 (0)7597007599
